'If It's F1, It's Vital'

High stakes excite Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton believes the high stakes of the Monaco track is what makes the circuit so exciting.

The tight, twisting circuit of Monte Carlo is seen by many as the crown jewel in the Formula One calendar.

It's part of the triple crown in World Motor Sport alongside the Indianapolis 500 and Le Mans 24 hour race as one of the biggest races in motor sport.

'Monaco is a very special circuit, It's up there with Silverstone as the place where I most want to do well at. British driver Lewis Hamilton told the BBC.

The first Monaco GP was held in 1929 and was included in the first Formula One season in 1950 and has been part of the F1 calendar every year since 1955.

That rich history is important in world of F1 when new tracks spring up on the calendar on an almost annual basis.

Drivers can look back to the greats like Ayrton Senna, who has been the most successful driver around this street circuit winning six times between 1987 and 1993.

But even the great Ayrton Senna famously became a victim of the Monaco track when in 1988, in a race he was dominating he lost concentration and crashed at Portier after being told to slow down by his team.

Hamilton added: 'Even though Monaco has the slowest average speed of all the circuits we visit in a season, it always feels incredibly quick.

'That's because the acceleration is so rapid and the walls so close: there really is no room for error.

'Apart from the run-off at Ste Devote, and the tiny escape roads at Mirabeau and the harbour chicane, there's no room to make a mistake.

'But when the stakes are at their highest, I just find it more exciting.'
