'If It's F1, It's Vital'

De Villota conscious and stable

Following the early morning reports immediately following a crash in testing for Marussia test driver Maria De Villota, there is now much better news.

The 32-year-old Spaniard is not out of the woods just yet with medical assessments continuing but things are hopefully now sounding a lot more positive.

In a freak accident after her first installation runs of the morning, her Marussia F1 car appeared to inexplicably accelerate and crashed into the back of the Marussia team truck which transports the cars around Europe.

Unfortunately the tailgate had apparently been lowered at the time and De Villota's helmet hit this on impact.

Reports suggest that she was unconscious for around 15 to 20 minutes, while she was treated by paramedics.

East of England Ambulance Service Spokesman Gary Sanderson told the media following the crash: 'A woman has sustained life-threatening injuries and following treatment at the scene by paramedics, she has been taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital for further care.'

By the time she arrived at hospital she was conscious and in a stable condition.

Throughout the afternoon medical examinations have continued and Marussia have released an updated statement regarding her condition.

“Further to the accident involving the Marussia F1 Team’s Test Driver Maria De Villota this morning, the team can confirm that Maria was transferred by ambulance from Duxford Airfield, where the accident happened, to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.' the statement on marussiaf1team.com said.

“Since Maria’s arrival at the hospital at approximately 10.45hrs this morning, she has been receiving the best medical attention possible at the hospital, which is the region’s major trauma centre. Maria is conscious and medical assessments are ongoing. The team will await the outcome of these assessments before providing further comment.

“The team’s first priority at this time is Maria and her family.”
