I'm getting the best out of my car says Button

McLaren came away from the British Grand Prix with their tail firmly between their legs.

In the build up to the race at Silverstone, McLaren had questioned the true pace of Red Bull following their dominant, performance in Valencia. They might not have taken the race victory, but Vettel's speed made everyone sit up and take notice.

McLaren and Mercedes both hoped that they had just found the sweet spot on the Pirelli tyres and that their pace was a one-off, like other drivers such as Nico Rosberg and Pastor Maldonado have had this year.

Unfortunately for McLaren though, it wasn't, but perhaps they should have lowered their expectation levels in any case?

McLaren at no point over the race weekend were contenders against Red Bull, for whatever reason they slipped well down the pecking order behind Red Bull, Ferrari, Lotus and Mercedes, while Jenson Button continued his season of struggle and spent most of the race battling with the likes of Force India, Sauber and Williams.

But while Button's form has notably dropped this season, the 2009 Formula One World Champion is confident that he is getting the best out of his car.

'I won't take anything away from the guys driving the Williams and the Saubers but we have a lot of experience in this sport and we feel we are getting the best out of this car now. Button was quoted by Sky Sports.

'The car doesn't feel bad, so it is amazing to think what the rest of the guys are driving around in. I wonder what would happen if you put another driver in this car - I bet they would get a real shock.

'You see a car come past like you are standing still and it comes as a surprise. You think, how good does their car feel? They must be on rails. I don't know where we are missing out or where so many teams are getting it right. We are just not quick enough.'

On Tuesday McLaren held a crisis meeting at their headquarters in Woking to discuss and analyse the performance of McLaren's 2012 World Championship.

McLaren are currently fourth in the Formula 1 constructors world championship, 74 points behind leaders Red Bull.

Lewis Hamilton is fourth in the Formula 1 drivers world championship, 37 points behind leader Fernando Alonso.

Jenson Button is eighth in the standings, 42 points behind his team-mate.
