Marussia to run with KERS next season

On the Formula One grid in 2012, there are ten teams running with a Kinetic Energy Recovery System and two teams who don't.

The two teams who currently do not run KERS systems are Marussia and HRT, the two teams who regularly find themselves at the bottom of the time sheets over a race weekend.

As anyone who follows Formula One will know the KERS device offers teams a bit of a power boost for a limited time around anyone lap.

In its simplest form the KERS device recovers the kinetic energy lost through heat when breaking, turns that energy into power, which can then be used to boost the car by around 80bhp over a period of just less than seven seconds. This can either be used in one big boost or in small doses around a lap.

So running without it, isn't a drastic disadvantage, because there are other areas of the cars development that create a bigger performance advantage.

But when you are one of the teams at the back of the grid, a big development boost such as the addition of KERS is a big step forward.

We saw the performance improvement of the Caterham team this season and next season it could be the turn of Marussia.

'Yes we will be using KERS next year, We plan to adopt the system that has been developed by Williams, which was used by them with the Cosworth engine last year and is currently with their Renault-engine car. Our 2013 unit is a development of this. Marussia consultant Pat Symonds said as quoted by Autosport Magazine.

'We've been very impressed with the engineering, the efficiency and the weight. Williams are also a pleasure to work with both technically and commercially.'

It will also prove an important step as energy recovery systems are likely to play a big part in F1 over the upcoming years as the changes in engine regulations also come into play in 2014.
