Russian Grand Prix remains on course for 2014

Russia are set to host their first ever Formula One race in 2014 and a brand new purpose built track is currently under construction in Sochi.

Sochi is Russia's largest resort, with a population of around 400,000 on the coast of the Black Sea.

An awful lot of development is currently going on in the region, with the Winter Olympics being hosted by Russia in 2014 and the Football World Cup coming to the region in 2018.

The Formula One track is receiving $200 million worth of funding after they secured a contract to host a Formula One race every year between 2014 and 2020.

Construction of the race control complex is now in the 'final stages' of construction, while the foundation works for the 3.7-mile circuit layout of the track is also ongoing.

Many massive Olympic venues are already built, some sport facilities have been put in commission, while the motorsport venue is in the active phase of construction,' a statement from circuit operating company Formula Sochi said in Autosport Magazine.

'Construction crews are making good progress with the preparing of groundworks and laying of the asphalt coat.

'The first layer of pavement has been laid in some areas.'

The track, much like many of the new Formula One circuits has been designed by German Hermann Tilke who said: 'Together with [track builder] Omega and Formula Sochi we are deeply involved in the Russian Grand Prix project and we are glad that all works are going according to schedule considering the large amount of coordination necessary with the Olympic construction.'
