'If It's F1, It's Vital'

Will a Scorpion emerge from the ashes of HRT?

The demise of the HRT Formula One team has left the sport with just eleven teams in 2013.

The Spanish team was liquidated at the end of last year after they failed to pay the entrance fee to enter the 2013 Formula One World Championship back in November.

With that deadline passing, the FIA have since confirmed that the F1 grid will consist of eleven teams, with Caterham and Marussia the only newbie teams remaining after three new teams entered Formula One in 2010.

But while HRT might be gone, they're not forgotten and from the ashes a new team could emerge.

Autosport Magazine have reported that a consortium of Canadian and American investors are attempting to secure HRT's Formula One place.

The team that would be known as Scorpion Racing are currently in the process of due diligence in purchasing the HRT team and its assets, which would include a place on the Formula One grid. Although a place for this season would seem unlikely, it could mean a return to 12 teams for the 2014 season.

The investors have held talks with Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone regarding their plans to run updated HRT F112 cars, Cosworth engines and a Williams gearbox and a decision regarding 2013 would be down to the FIA, although Bernie doesn't believe they stand much of a chance of being ready.

'I've spoken to them and told them to get in touch with the FIA and ask for an entry. he told Sky Sports.

'They want to buy all the bits from HRT, then form a company and ask for an entry, but I personally don't think it will happen. It's all a bit too late. Maybe they could do it for next year.'

Scorpion Racing would be based at a facility at Silverstone.
