Testing gets under way in Barcelona

The final winter testing session ahead of the 2011 Formula One World championship has gotten under way in Barcelona this morning.

To complicate matters, the test session runs for five days this time around, with all teams testing on four of those five days.

Williams, Ferrari, Mercedes and Hispania are expected to start testing tomorrow, running straight through Wednesday to Saturday.

Every one else is expected to make an appearance today and run Tuesday to Friday, however McLaren are expected to have a days rest on Thursday so will join Williams, Ferrari, Mercedes and Hispania on Saturday.

The final testing session could prove to be very interesting over the next few days, all the teams will be running the hard and soft Pirelli compounds as the teams and drivers continue to learn about their new rubber for 2011.

Tyre strategy looks likely to have a big impact on the 2011 season as the drivers and teams who can get the best out of their tyres will obviously be the ones who will enjoy success.

Mercedes and McLaren will be hoping that the latest developments on their 2011 cars will help them close the gap to Red Bull and Ferrari, who appear to be the favourites going into the Australian Grand Prix in a little over two weeks time.

Toro Rosso who have been the surprise package of winter testing so far will hope to also have a strong showing.
