Chandhok joins Lotus

Karun Chandhok has been announced as reserve driver for Lotus.

The 27-year-old Indian driver joins the team after gaining experience with Hispania racing last season.

Chandhok drove 10 races for Hispania in 2010, his best finish was 14th which he achieved twice, in Australia and Monaco however he was dropped after the British Grand Prix and was unable to seal a drive in F1 until now.

“This is another great day for Team Lotus,” Lotus team principal Tony Fernandes told formula1.com.

Following his 10 race stint with Hispania, Chandhok regularly joined the BBC commentary teams on 5live during practice sessions, where he quickly became a favourite amongst British fans for his wonderful insight into Formula One and his banter with commentators David Croft and Anthony Davidson.

Fernandes continued: “Karun's appointment to our team gives us not only his immense driving talent and F1 experience, both of which will help us develop the car even further, but also brings one of the warmest, most professional personalities I have the pleasure of knowing into the Team Lotus family.

“I do not think it is going too far to say that Karun represents the future of motor racing - he is living proof that geography is no boundary to talent and ambition and that you will succeed if you work hard and keep dreaming. He is fiercely proud of his Indian heritage but he has a truly global outlook and I am honoured that Team Lotus is now giving one of India’s brightest stars the chance to continue to develop his talent. Everyone in the team is excited about working with Karun, and I cannot wait to see him representing the Indian nation in our car.”

Chandhok will get behind the wheel of his new Lotus car on Friday as he is set to be involved in the first practice session for the Australian Grand Prix.

Fingers crossed he does well as he deserves another go in Formula One, his enthusiasm is infectious!
