'If It's F1, It's Vital'

Button predicts mayhem in closing stages

The final laps of the Australian Grand Prix could be very exciting according to former World champion Jenson Button.

The McLaren driver, who is well known for being somewhat of a tyre expert, believes there will be a lot of overtaking during the final stint of the race in Melbourne.

'I think you will see so much overtaking in the last stint here that it will shock everyone,' Jenson Button told the press on Thursday.

'It is going to go to the last corner in this race, which is great. I don't know if all of the races will be like that, but this one will because we don't understand the tyres yet.'

The speed in which the tyres drop away is the reason behind Button's thinking.

The softer compound is capable of being around three or four seconds per lap faster during the early stages of its life and with different drivers and teams running different strategies, drivers will be at different stages of their tyres running when the race comes to an end.

Pit early in the final stage of the race and you could over take a fair few of your rivals, however that driver will soon lose their early advantage and be at a disadvantage in the final few laps with other cars running on fresh rubber.

'It is a balancing act and it is going to take a few races to work out what the best strategy is.' Button concluded.

Considering Button's record with looking after his tyres and tyre strategy, copying the Brit might be one of the cleverer strategies on the grid!
