Ron Dennis back in control at McLaren

Ron Dennis has replaced Martin Whitmarsh as McLaren's chief executive officer in what the BBC have reported as a 'coup'.

66-year-old Dennis who stood down as McLaren team principal in 2009, does not intent to return to his old position following the shift in power at McLaren, but considering he has been at war in the boardroom with Martin Whitmarsh it would appear Whitmarsh's position as team principal is under threat.

One possible candidate for the role could be Ross Brawn, who left Mercedes at the end of last season.

In a statement Dennis said that McLaren shareholders had: 'mandated me to write an exciting new chapter in the story of McLaren, beginning by improving our on-track and off-track performance'.

'Over the coming weeks, I intend to undertake a thorough and objective review of each of our businesses with the intention of optimising every aspect of our existing operations, while identifying new areas of growth that capitalise on our technologies, and where appropriate further investing in them.

'During February, I will articulate a new Group strategy and implement the organisational structure best suited to achieving it.'

Dennis remains a 25% shareholder of McLaren, alongside Mansour Ojjeh [25%] and Mumtalakat [Bahrain Royal family] investment fund [50%].

This is a positive move by the board. McLaren need to get back to winning ways to keep major sponsors. Brawn will take over as TP before the season starts. Ron who still owns 25% of the company must have convinced the other major owners to do something. Whitmarsh is a loser.
