Alonso finds the positives

The opening two rounds of the 2014 FIA Formula One World Championship has not gone to plan for Ferrari and Fernando Alonso.

The change in regulations for 2014 should have given Ferrari the opportunity to seize a performance advantage, with the new hybrid engines and power-trains handing a development advantage to the manufacturers rather than the private teams.

Teams like Red Bull Racing and Williams have to work alongside their engine manufacturer, so that Red Bull have to work in partnership with Renault and the same with Williams and Mercedes to put the best car together.

But at Mercedes and Ferrari, the two sides of development should go hand in hand and as Mercedes have demonstrated that should have been the best formula for Ferrari to take a march on their rivals.

But despite pairing two-time Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso with one-time title holder Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari have once again started the season slowly.

While Mercedes have secured both pole positions and both race wins with Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari have struggled to keep the pace with the top sides.

In Australia, Alonso qualified in fifth, ahead of his team-mate who lined up finished twelfth. In the race Alonso finished fourth after the eventual disqualification of Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, while Raikkonen finished seventh.

In Malaysia it was a similar story. Alonso again out-qualifying Kimi, with the Ferrari's starting fourth and sixth, with the Spaniard going on to once again finish fourth with Kimi out of the points in twelfth.

'We have some work to do, Obviously for Bahrain there will not be much to do as in five days we are in the car again, but for China and Spain I think it is very clear what we need to bring [to] the car.

'For Bahrain I don't think the picture will change too much from here. We are on track again in five days so the cars will not change magically at any of the teams, so it will be more or less similar.
Alonso told Sky Sports.

But there are some positives for Alonso. He's taking pride in beating his team-mate and solid points are keeping Ferrari at least within touching distance in the points chase.

'It is not the perfect position to start the championship - we would like to have won the first two races, but we were not in that position, The team is doing a massive effort to catch up and improve the situation, personally I would like to fight for victories, but as long as you are in front of your team-mate then you are doing something extra.

'We will improve. We have only done two races, we are analysing the areas were we need to improve - they seem very clear to us and will try to run as soon as possible to the level of Mercedes and Red Bull. Until that day we need to score points as we are doing and looking at the performance we have had in these two races we have one point less than Hamilton and nine points more than Vettel and that is something that is less negative from these two races. We are scoring good points and until we are competitive that is the goal.'
