'If It's F1, It's Vital'

This year will be an arms race

This Formula One season has been described as an 'arms race' by Red Bull team boss Christian Horner.

Red Bull go into the second round of the 2011 F1 season as heavy favourites following Sebastian Vettel's dominating performance in Australia.

Many believe it's just a case of predicting just how far ahead they will prove to be. One intriguing area of debate is whether they will run with a KERS device at Sepang.

Red Bull didn't run their KERS at all on Saturday and Sunday at Melbourne, but the Malaysian track has long fast straights, which will prove to give a much bigger benefit to cars with a KERS device in comparison to Australia.

Red Bull could yet run again without it, giving over an advantage to rivals Ferrari and McLaren, but with Vettel's performance in Australia, they might still have enough to keep the opposition at arms reach.

But over the course of the season Horner believes the teams will have to be constantly upgrading and modifying their cars to keep progressing and remain competitive.

'we saw the steps McLaren made from being woefully uncompetitive [in winter testing] to being right there with some modifications [in Australia].' Red Bull team boss Christian Horner told the BBC.

'It will effectively be an arms race this year in terms of development and getting performance from the car.

'We demonstrated we could do it last year, the challenge is to do it again.

'We take nothing for granted, there's no sense of throttling back because we think we're competitive - we're very keen to build on the performance we saw in Melbourne at the weekend.'
