McLaren make Hamilton & Alonso approaches?

Formula One is notorious for it's 'silly season' where rumours fly around the media and paddock.

But in Formula One even the most bizarre and outrageous rumours should not be dismissed.

No-one believed the extrovert and BBC pundit Eddie Jordan when he declared that Lewis Hamilton would be leaving McLaren for Mercedes.

McLaren at the time were the regular race winners, whilst Mercedes had always failed to deliver. But just a few months later the deal was signed and announced.

Fast forward to 2014 and all those who criticised Hamilton for only making the move for money will be finding quick ways to backtrack on their previous comments.

The move for Hamilton has worked out perfectly, he appears to have left a team in free-fall and joined a team set to dominate the 2014 Formula One World Championship.

A move back to McLaren for Lewis Hamilton doesn't seem out of the realms of possibility, it is his spiritual home after all as he literally grew up as part of the team, but surely a return as early as next season couldn't be on the cards?

Well according to the Daily Mail and The Daily Telegraph as quoted by Sky Sports McLaren have 'opened very tentative dialogue with Lewis Hamilton'.

The Telegraph believe that ‘The only circumstances in which Hamilton would leave Mercedes are if he lost out to Nico Rosberg for the drivers’ championship.’

Could missing out on a second F1 title be too much for Hamilton to take? Would he really take his ball and go home?

'If Hamilton were to lose the title to Rosberg, imagine the trauma that would accompany that outcome.’ said the Daily Mail’s Jonathan McEvoy.

It seems too much of a stretch for us at VitalF1, but the other rumour of a possible McLaren return for Fernando Alonso seems much more realistic.

The Spaniard has been linked with a possible return to McLaren for the past year and with Ferrari continuing to struggle to design and build a race winning car, let alone a championship winning car, the man said to be the best driver of his generation is going to get itchy feet following year-after-year of frustration.

But making the step as early as next season as McLaren bed in with new engine suppliers Honda for 2015 would be seen as a massive gamble.

‘Fernando Alonso, who left the team in acrimonious circumstances at the end of 2007 and has become disillusioned with life at Ferrari, seems the most likely candidate [for McLaren], although it remains to be seen whether the Spaniard can be persuaded to join for the first year of Honda engines in 2015,’ the Telegraph concluded.
