Will Red Bull run KERS in Malaysia?

As the Formula One circus rolls into Sepang for the Malaysian Grand Prix, one of the questions on everyone's mind is will Red Bull run a KERS device this weekend?

The two other main discussion points are whether the moveable rear wing will be more affective with the longer straights in Malaysia and how the tyres will perform in temperatures that the new Pirelli tyres simply have yet to be tested at.

Both variables we will not have answers too until the race gets under way on Sunday morning.

But one question we should soon know the answer too is whether Red Bull will run KERS or again choose to run without it.

'We ran the system on Friday, it ran without any real issue, and [the decision not to use] it was purely based on a lack of mileage on the system that our confidence was relatively low.'

'I think now, armed with that mileage, and having inspected all the components, our confidence has grown - and hopefully if it runs well on Friday in Malaysia it will make its race debut during the Malaysia weekend.'
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner told Autosport Magazine.

So are we any closer to knowing the answer to the question everyone wants an answer to? Was that a hint, surely they must have some indication of whether or not Red Bull will run with KERS this weekend?

Horner continued: 'It didn't hurt us too much at the last race, but it is, you have to remember, a free extra 80 horsepower, so over a lap it's effectively free lap time of anything between 0.3-0.4s,'

'Obviously the motivation and desire is to have it onto the car as quickly as possible, but we won't compromise the performance of the car or the potential reliability of the car if we feel that the system isn't race-sturdy yet.'

It's likely that Red Bull will use the same tactic as they did for Australia in Malaysia this weekend.

Two weeks ago the Red Bull team ran their KERS device during Friday's practice session and made a decision over whether they would use it for Qualifying and the race on Friday night, keeping their decision as a secret to the other teams.

Horner has confirmed they will run it on Friday, but expect them to remain tight-lipped going into Saturday and Sunday regarding their actual decision.
