'If It's F1, It's Vital'

If DRS doesn't work in Malaysia it never will

Red Bull's Mark Webber believes that the driver enabled moveable rear wing or 'Drag Reduction System' [DRS] will be much more suited to Malaysia's Sepang circuit.

The FIA has now confirmed that the DRS detection zone, where a driver must be within one second of the car in front will be situated 207 metres before the final corner, with the activation zone coming just after the final corner.

This will enable drivers to use the moveable rear wing, for the full length of Sepang's start-finish straight and is expected to be much more effective than it proved to be in the opening round of the Formula One season in Australia.

'I got pretty close to Fernando [Alonso] a few times and only once with Lewis [Hamilton] on lap three, Fernando was someone I expected to put more pressure on.' Webber confessed to Autosport Magazine, while reflecting on what proved to be another disappointing race on his home circuit.

Looking back to the use of the wing, Webber believes the track played a big part in the wing proving to be ineffective, but believes in Sepang spectators should see it working as planned.

'it was a characteristic of the corner onto the start-finish [at Melbourne] - it was too quick. And the entry to Turn 1, even if you got close, it was easy for the guy to manipulate the line for you, and give you a different trajectory into the corner.

'Here [at Sepang] will be a completely different story – if you are within the zone on the Apex of Turn 15.

'If it doesn't work here I don't know where it will work. You have a slow corner to open the lap, a slow corner at the braking point, and Heathrow airport in between as well in terms of options, so it should work.'


There had been talk of the FIA allowing the DRS to be in use for both the back straight and the start-finish line, but at Thursday's meeting the decision was made to only use it on one straight, which seems a bit of a shame as it would have been nice to see it working and having it in use on two straights would have doubled our chances of seeing it in action!
