Greatest day for Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton took the 2014 Formula One World Championship with victory in Abu Dhabi.

In front of his father, brother, sister, step-mum and girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger, Hamilton won his eleventh Grand Prix of the season to clinch the title in style.

Many onlookers had suggested that Hamilton had looked desperate to remain focussed on the prize over the weekend, whilst team-mate Rosberg remained determined to niggle at Hamilton with words to the media.

But it wasn't until Sunday and the arrival of his family where Hamilton appeared to finally relax. Whether it was a coincidence or not, Sunday proved to be his day where Saturday had clearly not been.

Fine margins determined the outcome of the title race, although the statistics might suggest otherwise.

Hamilton of course won 11 of the 19 races this season, whilst Mercedes team-mate Rosberg won just 5. [16 race victories for Mercedes in a single season is a record].

With the 50-points from Abu Dhabi, the margin of victory in the Championship stands at a whopping 67-points.

But in the end all that matters is that Lewis Hamilton has become a two-time Formula One World Champion, Hamilton declaring his 2014 success as better than his maiden 2008 title victory.

'This is the greatest day of my life. 2008 was special but the feeling I have now is way past that. It's the greatest feeling I have ever had,Ē Hamilton told Sky Sports Martin Brundle on the podium.

Speaking to Damon Hill he later added: 'I donít know if itís because of the experience I had in 2008, but this feels a million times better. It feels so much better. Itís a positive feeling in my heart. In 2008 I had it, I lost it, I had it, I lost it, I lost it the year before. It just all happened so quickly. Iíve had time to get to grips with Formula 1, learn the ropes, grow as an individual and today I feel so much more whole as a person. So it feels better, for sure.

Hamilton has also declared that he would like to keep with the number 44 on his Mercedes car rather than take the traditional number 1 for the reigning F1 title holder.

ď44 has always been my number since the day I started. I won my first championship [in karting] on number 44 and Iím going to work very hard to ask the team if I can keep 44 on my car next year.

ďNumber one is a great thing and Iíll always know that Iím number one, but 44 is my favourite number so I want to keep it on the car.Ē
