Hamilton defends move in Malaysia

The 2008 Formula One World champion may well have accepted his 20 second penalty without complaint, however Lewis Hamilton still maintains the belief that he did little wrong when defending his position against Fernando Alonso last weekend in Malaysia.

The incident went unnoticed by BBC commentators and analysers on Sunday, with the decision to award the McLaren a 20 second penalty surprising many as race control had not even stated that the incident would be investigated after the race.

It would appear the incident was only highlighted after Fernando Alonso was called to the stewards to explain his side of the incident which resulted in him crashing into Hamilton a lap later.

The result of the investigation into that incident resulted in Ferrari's Alonso also received a 20 second penalty, fortunately for him the time penalty didn't cost him his sixth position, while Hamilton was bumped down from seventh to eighth.

'I don't think I was overly defending my position, I'm a racer, and people want to see racing, they want to see overtaking and I would never in a million years try to put anyone else - or even myself - in danger. Hamilton told Autosport Magazine.

'When you're defending you have to try and make your car as wide as possible. The rule is basically that you're not allowed to make more than one manoeuvre to defend, but where they were saying I was defending too much was on the straight, where he actually was 10 or 15 metres behind me, so I wasn't defending a move that he had done.

'But it's how you interpret the rules and you can't do anything about it. But I appreciate all the support I've had.'
