Bianchi remains in a coma six months on from crash

Jules Bianchi's father has given an update on the drivers condition, six months after the horrific crash in Japan.

25-year-old Jules Bianchi crashed during the Japanese Grand Prix on a wet Suzuka circuit in October 2014.

Sauber's Adrian Sutil had crashed on the very same turn a lap earlier and crashed into the tyre barrier, however for Bianchi, his Marussia crashed into the recovery vehicle which was retrieving Sutil's Sauber.

Immediately following the incident the safety car and doctors car was then deployed, followed by an ambulance which took Bianchi to Mie General Medical Center in Yokkaich.

The FIA confirmed that Bianchi left the circuit unconscious after suffering a diffuse axonal brain injury and was in a critical but stable condition.

He remained in a artificial coma for around six weeks, when it was then announced that he was breathing unaided. Whilst he remained unconscious and critical, he was moved from Japan to the Le Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Nice in France, which is where he continues his rehabilitation.

“The only thing we can say is that he fights with force, as it has always fought before and after the accident,” Philippe Bianchi told Nice-Matin newspaper as quoted by Sky Sports.

“Every day, Jules is doing a marathon. From a medical point of view, his condition is stable. It is fairly autonomous - no physical problem. All his organs are working without assistance. But for now, he remains unconscious, in a coma.

“For this kind of trauma, as we know, evolution is very slow. Compared to what we were told by the Japanese professor who was immediately operated in Yokkaichi, this is already night and day. There, when we arrived, with Jules’ mum, there was no hope. The prognosis was alarming.

“There was talk of irreversible damage.

He added: “Jules is young. He is 25 years old. He is very strong physically as he survived such a shock. You know, I'm very proud of Jules. I have always been. So we hope for a new development.
