'If It's F1, It's Vital'

Kubica enters 'second phase' in recovery

Robert Kubica has undergone another operation following his rally crash in February.

The 26-year-old crashed a Skoda Fabia during the opening stage of the Ronde di Andora rally in Italy back in February.

His car crashed into a barrier which penetrated his car leaving him with a partially severed right hand and fractures to his right leg and arm.

In the days following his accident, the Pole underwent three operations and was put in an induced coma to help aid his recovery, it had been hoped that he wouldn’t require any further surgery, but in early March, Kubica had a fourth operation to help the mobility of his elbow.

After a month of rehabilitation the Renault driver underwent his latest procedure which was to remove adhesions affecting the functionality of his right forearm and elbow muscles.

Kubica will undergo many more small operations as he steps up his rehabilitation plan.

'Thanks to Robert's strength and to a highly attentive medical plan, the delicate period was overcome positively and without any complications,

'With the progress of his recovery, we are now entering the second phase, which is heavy rehabilitation aimed to restore functionality.'
A Renault statement quoted by the BBC read.

While it is believed that doctors and specialists are surprised by the speed his condition is improving, it remains unclear how long the Polish driver's recovery will take.

'it is a matter of time and even if patience isn't Robert's first quality, he is fully aware that rehabilitation could be quite a long process.' Renault team boss Eric Boullier told Autosport Magazine.

It is expected that when Kubica leaves hospital he will travel to Dr. Ceccarelli's facilities in Italy where he will start a deep rehabilitation and training programme.
