Perez set for medical

Sauber driver Sergio Perez will face a medical ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix.

He will not know if he is allowed to race until he passes the test later this week.

“Of course I want to race in Montreal, but I also know the final decision is up to the FIA doctors. I have never been to Montreal and know the circuit only from watching TV. Originally it was planned I would go to the Ferrari simulator at Maranello, but this had to be cancelled after my accident. he told formula1.com.

“Anyway, it is not the first unknown circuit for me and I have never had difficulties adapting. I found it very hard to be just a TV spectator for the race in Monaco, and can’t wait to get into the car again.”

Perez is likely to undergo the medical on either Wednesday or Thursday with FIA chief medical officer Gary Hartstein.

Perez suffered concussion and a bruised thigh in the crash during Monaco qualifying but left hospital a week ago and he should be cleared to race as long as there are no clear health issues.

Whilst exiting the tunnel, his Sauber snapped right, hit the barrier before continuing on and slammed side-on into the barriers on the exit of the Nouvelle chicane.

A number of drivers have done this through the years, with the most notable being Karl Wendlinger in 1994.

The Austrian was not as lucky as Perez with the then Sauber driver left unconscious and he remained in a coma for several weeks, before he went on to make a full recovery and return F1 and he now races in GT1.
