Crashes in Monaco - Video Special
Spent a day in Monaco yesterday and decided to take a closer look at the problem with crashes over the years coming out of the tunnel.
Hope you enjoy the videos, I also walked the tunnel and came to the conclusion that coming out of the gloom into bright sunlight is not the problem as I thought before.
The first 250 metres is open to the sea so not that dark, only the last 200 metres is in complete artficial light so eyes don't have to adjust that much.
No, it's the track its self.
In retrospect there are kinks in the surface but no more than you'd expect on a street track. However the camber of the road is strange. It leans a little to the left (sea side) so if you don't hug the right of the track, at 220 kph a wheel can lift off the track. If you then try to adjust to the right you kiss the barrier and so it's your race over as then you meet the sharpish drop towards the left turn that takes you to Tabac so you are now flying.
I remember a couple of shunts there at the GP Historique last year. Also there have been some serious accidents in this area over the years when it's being used as a road.
Conclusion - do nothing. This is possibly the most exciting race on the calender and drivers know it.
