Pirelli to test new tyre in Germany

Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli will be giving teams a new version of its soft tyre in Friday practice at Germany's Nurburgring.

While the Pirelli compounds have proved hugely popular with spectators, the bosses at Pirelli are conscious about the tyres durability as they do not want to force teams into making too many pit-stops during the race.

It's a fine balance as the different compounds create different tyre strategies and can create some good on track racing, but teams do not want to see more than four pit stops in a race, so the new soft compound will be slightly harder (but not as hard as a medium) in the hopes that it will be more durable.

'It's not a big change from the current specification, but it is designed to fit in line with our latest versions of the P Zero Silver hard tyre and P Zero White medium, both of which are a little harder than their original specification in order to reduce degradation,' Pirelli motorsport boss Paul Hembery told Autosport Magazine.

'There's no decision yet on when we might use the new tyre yet, but it will be very interesting to hear all the feedback from the teams,'
