Pirelli to revamp colour coding

Formula 1's official tyre supplier Pirelli are considering a revamp to their colour coding of its tyres.

Under current Formula One regulations each driver must use two different compounds of rubber during a race.

The idea is that the two different compounds offer differing characteristics during a race with one being faster but less durable and the other being able to complete more laps but offer a slower race pace.

The two compounds offer teams different strategies and create more on track action for the spectators.

To enable the the fans at the track and everyone watching on television to easily identify which tyre a driver is on, a colour coding system was created by the Italian tyre manufacturer.

The Hard compound is identified with a Silver band, the Medium compound is White, the Soft is Yellow and finally the Super-Soft is red.

But for 2012 it looks likely to be all change.

'I think we need to have a little bit of variety there and we need to improve the marking, certainly in the harder and medium compound with the silver and white, Pirelli director of motorsport Paul Hembery told Autosport Magazine.

'we need to differentiate that and give more colour, so the tyres are recognisable when they are going around. We are working on it. We haven't got the solutions yet and maybe we could even have a contest for people to choose Pirelli tyre colours next year.'

I felt the silver and white would be difficult to tell appart at the start of the year. If they made one of them the extreme wets then it's going to be very rare we'll see white and silver on track at the same time it will either be too dry for wets or too wet for slicks.
