Pirelli to meet with FOTA

Formula One's tyre manufacturer Pirelli will meet with the Formula One Teams Association [FOTA] ahead of this weekends Korean Grand Prix.

Pirelli, along with spectators and media have been left frustrated that teams are opting to not run in Q3 in a bid to save tyres for the race and gain the advantage of starting the race on fresh tyres.

Over the past couple of races this has seen at least two of the ten drivers who made it through to the 'pole positions shoot-out' to remain in the garage during the final session, robbing the paying spectators at the circuit and the fans around the world on television of the full spectacle of the final qualifying session.

'Something needs to happen, I am going to have a sit down with Oliver [Weingarten] from FOTA, and the Sporting Working Group, in Korea this week, and we will have a formal meeting in India about the whole thing. Pirelli's Hembery told Autosport Magazine.

Pirelli however are not sure how quickly the changes can be made, but his frustrations were quite clear.

'We need to come up with some proposals. We have some ideas and we have to try and find a common ground to how we solve it.'

'There is nothing too wrong with the qualifying. This three session system is very good: it is just that conserving tyres is nonsense. And it is nonsense because if Vettel and the top six can win races having gone through the three sessions, then it means everyone can do it.

Ironically Pirelli have also been calling for a change in the regulations to prevent teams wasting so many compounds of tyre at each race track.

Pirelli believe each driver wastes at least one set of tyres at each race and Pirelli would like a change in the rules to stop the waste and lower costs.
