'If It's F1, It's Vital'

Massa tells Barrichello to retire

Ironically, at a time when many people in Formula One are questioning Ferrari driver Felipe Massa's future in F1, the Brazilian has advised Rubens Barrichello to quit the sport.

39-year-old Barrichello goes into his home Grand Prix not knowing where his future in Formula One stands.

His contract with the Williams team is set to expire after the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend and Force India driver Adrian Sutil and 2007 Formula One World Champion Kimi Raikkonen have already been linked with a move to the team.

Barrichello is hopeful he can remain in Formula One and compete in what would be his 20th season in the sport.

Compatriot Felipe Massa however believes he should use this weekends Brazilian Grand Prix as fitting tribute to a great career.

'I did give him an advice: to quit,' Massa told TotalRace in an interview quoted by Autosport Magazine.

'To me, Barrichello had an incredible career in F1: the driver who competed in most GPs and with many wins under his belt. It is a career most drivers would dream to have.

'He raced for the best teams in F1. I haven't advise him to quit because I feel he is old or something like that. But today in F1 there are 12 teams, and five or six are asking for money to give a seat. I think this is absurd.

Massa concluded: 'I told him to quit and to use this last race to have a proper ending. But I know he will do what he thinks is the best for him and, as a friend, I will support him and hoping for the best for him.'

To date, Barrichello has started 321 Grand Prix's, has won 11 races, has finished on the podium 68 times and has started from pole position 14 times since making his debut for Jordan in March 1993 at the South African Grand Prix.
