Schumacher could agree new Mercedes deal

Seven-time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher could be offered a new deal by Mercedes next season.

Schumacher's current contract with Mercedes GP expires at the end of the 2012 season.

With the German driver about to turn 43, most expected Schumacher to retire this time next year.

However his form in 2011 has been greatly improved in comparison to his 2010 results and Mercedes have not ruled out extending his time with the team.

'The contract includes one more season, but obviously should we both have a good year, both the team and Michael, then why not carry on for another year?' Mercedes GP boss Ross Brawn told Autosport Magazine.

'It all depends on 2012: midway through next season we'll take a collective decision. I'm very calm: we have plans, at the moment, and I really don't believe he's thinking of going elsewhere...'

With one race of the season remaining, Schumacher will be aiming to take seven more points than team-mate Nico Rosberg in Brazil. If Schumacher can manage that, he will beat Rosberg in the drivers championship.

suppose if he is also helping in development it makes sense, not sure it is seemly watching a great champion languishing though
The Fear
Agree fear. He's holding a seat that a promising youngster could have

Great champion? Are we sure when he was "great" his performances would have been any better? A little perhaps, but the only reason he was ever great was because he had a multi billion pound team built around him during the most uncompetitive era in the sport.
DJ
Well said dj. IMO mansell was atleast an equal with the rest just ordinary. Look what he did when he moved to Indi
