'If It's F1, It's Vital'

Alguersuari joins BBC team

Jaime Alguersuari was left without a drive in Formula One after his axing by the Toro Rosso team in December.

The 21-year-old Spanish driver was left surprised by the late decision, which left him with limited options not only in Formula One but other formulas of motor racing.

It was a sharp fall from grace for the Spaniard, who after making his debut for the team mid-way through the 2009 season in Hungary, Alguersuari was the youngest ever driver to race in Formula One.

Jaime Alguersuari went on to start 46 races, with his best result a seventh place finish, which he achieved twice this season in Italy and Korea.

For any driver, losing their seat is a big blow, but for someone who had come through the ranks with the Red Bull Racing team since he was 15, it would have been particularly tough for Alguersuari, not that he would ever complain writing on his website at the time: 'I am not a victim because for seven years I have enjoyed the privilege of being in the best team in the world'. and adding: 'life is full of opportunities and challenges'.

That latest challenge is to join the BBC Radio 5 live team as an expert summariser.

'It will be interesting to look at the action from a different angle and bring that excitement and insight to listeners, It promises to be an exciting season and I can't wait for it to start.' Alguersuari told the BBC

He will be working alongside BBC Radio 5 live controller Adrian van Klaveren, James Allen and Jennie Gow.

van Klaveren added: 'We're delighted to have Jaime on board, his engaging personality makes him a great addition to 5 live for the 2012 F1 season.

'We are going to make the most of Jaime's first-hand experience right now knowing he could well be driving for one of the teams again in the near future.'
