'If It's F1, It's Vital'

Perez wants to join 'big team'

Ever since the Grand Prix in Malaysia, one driver has been the main focus.

And it isn't 'cry baby' Vettel as HRT driver Narain Karthikeyan called the back-to-back World Champion, neither was it Fernando Alonso who managed to drag an uncompetitive Ferrari to the top step of the podium.

It wasn't even either of the McLaren drivers, it was Sauber's Sergio Perez.

The 22-year-old Mexican has impressed since day one last year and even ahead of the Malaysian Grand Prix he was being linked with a move to Ferrari for 2013.

Then his stock went even higher when he drove his Sauber to fabulous second place finish and even flirted with a battle for the lead before he lost momentum and slipped behind following a mistake on a greasy corner.

The rumours about a switch have intense over the past week, despite Ferrari giving a very public backing to current driver Felipe Massa.

But while the Brazilian's future remains in doubt at Ferrari, Perez appears confident that he can secure a move to one of the so-called big teams in the near future.

'In the future my goal is to be in a big team and to be fighting for victories. The most important thing is having a car that gives me the chance to win races,' Perez told NDTV as quoted by Sky Sports.

He had that chance in Malaysia, but it's unlikely that Sauber will be able to consistently offer him that opportunity.

It was the first time a Mexican driver had stood on the podium in 40 years and some in the paddock have even compared him to Formula One legend Ayrton Senna.

'It makes me proud that people compare me to someone like Senna, but I've still got a lot to do in my career to receive that kind of praise,

But while he may have not been willing accept such illustrious comparisons just yet, he did make one bold declaration: 'I believe that in two or three years I will be fighting for the World Championship.'

Will Perez live up to his promise? Only time and a good team, will tell.
