Ferrari unveil redesign on final day of test

On the final day of testing in Mugello, Ferrari unveiled a dramatic redesign to the rear of their car.

Clear alterations to the layout of the exhaust exits and the design of the rear bodywork have been made and it looks like it could be a major step forward for Ferrari.

Fernando Alonso was immediately quicker during the morning on Thursday, setting a time of 1 minute 21.363 seconds, which happened to be the quickest time that the track had seen all week at that point in the day.

'It looks like a reasonable step forward - you could be looking at 0.2 seconds a lap, possibly more.' BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson said while reviewing the new design.

It wasn't all good news for the former two-time F1 champ however as he also crashed his new Ferrari, damaging the front wing costing Ferrari quite a bit of running time.

But Alonso's early pace has to be seen as a positive for Ferrari, as the new rear design is the first phase of numerous planned changes which also include a new front wing and diffuser, which are set for their debut at the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona.

'the new Ferrari design is definitely an improvement.' Anderson continued.

'There is no exhaust interference, and while they're struggling with the car it is better to get rid of that for now and go in search of the bigger gains they need.

'Before, they were chasing the smaller gains from the exhaust but losing much more by compromising overall performance.'
