'If It's F1, It's Vital'

Williams mechanic in a stable condition

One of the Williams teams pit crew has flown back to England to continue his recovery in hospital.

The Williams teams celebrations on Sunday evening were marred by a pit lane fire that hospitalized seven people.

In total 31 people suffered injuries following the fire, with a full investigation into the incident taking place, which includes the Williams team, local Spanish authorities and the FIA.

The fire took hold, while the team members were celebrating Pastor Maldonado's victory and dramatic video from Sky Sports and BBC showed members of practically every team joining in with attempts to try and control the blaze from the front of the garage and to the rear of the paddock.

While seven people were sent to hospital after the blaze, six were later released, while one Williams team member remained in hospital for two days after suffering burns.

He is said to be in a stable condition, but he will remain in hospital now that he has flown back to the UK.

'There were a number of people who attended the circuit medical centre, mostly as the result of smoke inhalation, One team member remains in hospital having suffered burns, but he is in a stable condition and in good spirits and has returned to England today for further medical care.' Williams chief operations engineer Mark Gillan told the media on Wednesday.

Team boss Frank Williams also spoke to the media, thanking the other teams for the help they received during the incident.

'Everyone at Williams F1 is extremely relieved that this event was contained as quickly as it was and the damage which occurred was, relatively speaking, limited in its nature.

'While the incident was unexpected and definitely most undesirable, it has demonstrated the genuine cohesiveness, camaraderie and spirit of co-operation that exists within the F1 paddock.

'The astonishing response from the teams and other paddock personnel was immediate, unconditional and overwhelming.'
he told the BBC .
