Monaco FP1 – Alonso on a steady run

FP1 – Alonso on a steady run

Finally it’s the Practice day on Thursday – one of many special features on Monaco. Teams weren’t fooled by the street track as it had taken a little time to get the session busy on traffic.

Jean Eric Vergne and Daniel Ricciardo made their way in to settle up the dusty track as they spent more of a lonely time.

Vergne had found just a tenth quicker than Ricciardo. At the half way point, Romain Grosjean who lapped around putting some fast laps and Michael Schumacher hit the track.

It was Romain who had the upper hand on the multi-time winner. Grosjean’s lead time stood for a while before Alonso breaking the mark.

Hamilton arrived at the scene fastest, after which, it was Grosjean who did it all over again. Alonso came back from pits with 15 minutes left to play with and put on some quick laps to re-emerge fastest.

While setting the fastest first sector time on his third lap, Heikki Kovaleinen had blown out his engine with smoke blocking the whole visibility off the tunnel in an unusual way.

He laid on some trail of oil on track at the exit of tunnel – inevitably ending the session red flagged with eight minutes to spare.

Sergio Perez stood third after a fine display coming back from his horrific crash at the same venue ahead of Lewis Hamilton and the latest Grand Prix winner Pastor Maldonado.

Despite half a second slower, Felipe Massa finished a decent sixth ahead of the other Sauber after scraping the barriers at Tabac. 2012 race winners Button, Vettel and Rosberg rounding out the top 10.

Kimi Raikkonen’s rue on power steering continued as he would go no further than an installation lap. Michael Schumacher clipped off his front wing at the inside of the Swimming Pool chicane.

Things seemed as same for Senna at eighteenth. Narain Karthikeyan surprisingly went ahead of the Marussias and his team-mate to twentieth.
