Canadian Grand Prix Under Threat?
If you thought you had seen the last of protests surrounding the Formula One think again.
If you cast your mind back to Bahrain and the controversy surrounding the Grand Prix there, the thought that we may have to endure it all once again may cause you some anxiety.
The Quebec newspaper ‘La Presse’ reported yesterday the great possibility of protests against the race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve maybe targeted as part of a campaign against increases in university fees of 75%.
After the Liberal Government refused to negotiate over the controversial Bill 78 passed on 18th May which gave emergency powers forbidding freedom of assembly and the right to protest or picket and also denies educational employees the right to strike.
The increase in violence and threats from Student bodies of a “weekend of disruption”, with a view to having the race cancelled claiming that it espouses “sexist, non-environmental and elitist values.”
Bernie Ecclestone has already given notice to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve to make changes before 2013 or face expulsion from the Grand Prix calendar.
The students protest is therefore another blow to the circuit.
The Canadian Grand Prix or Grand Prix du Canada as it is known to the French speaking population has been part of the Formula One Championship since 1967, held at several venues until it took up its permanent home in Montreal in 1978 although was not included in the GP calendar in 2009 for safety reasons.
In 2005 the Canadian Grand Prix was the most watched Formula One Grand Prix in the World. It was also the third most watched sporting event behind Super Bowl XXXIX and UEFA champion League Final.
I personally look forward to this great Grand Prix event which I will be attending, with great excitement and with hope that this venue will continue for many years to come. It is also my hope, indeed my prayer, that this event will not only go ahead trouble free but that it will continue to be one of the great circuits on the Grand Prix calendar.
