VF1blog: History of European GP
Before the 1st World War and until James Hunt’s first of last three victories in 1977, many circuits around Europe held the honour of being the destination for European GP. The Italian Grand Prix was named the European Grand Prix seven times. It was considered as the most honorary name given to a circuit in those years, though the races were taken place in their respective names itself.
But after that, it returned to F1 only in 1983, having featured as European GP in every calender year till date precluding 1986-1992 and 1998 seasons. Mesmerising circuits of speed like Brands Hatch, Donington, Nurburgring, and Jerez have all conducted the Grand Prix of Europe.
In 1983, Piquet and Prost’s battle fired-up the race stage as Piquet went on to win it but Prost held the Championship lead from him by two points at Brands Hatch. After 1985 race in Brands, there was no European GP scene until the end of 1992.
One of the greatest drives from Ayrton Senna would be witnessed when European GP was revived at Donington Park. The dramatic race needs no introduction as the great one driving the incompetent Mclaren overtook Schumacher, Wendlinger, Hill and Prost in less than 40 seconds to win it in style under atrocious conditions.
In 1997, at the Dry Sack corner in Jerez, the infamous collision of Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve took place. Schuey’s deliberation excluded him of points from being the world champion that year handing Mika Hakkinen his first ever race victory.
It was Nurburgring’s turn of hosting the event from 1999-2007 and later it was announced that Germany would have a single race alternating between Hockenheim and Nurburgring.
Since 2008, it fell into the hands of rather disappointing Street Circuit of Valencia. If I was Bernie, I would rather go with Jerez instead of being the only choice if it had to happen in Spain, as Catalunya hosts the Spanish GP. I never thought bringing down more DRS would bring excitement to the Tilke designed circuit. It is on my list of Abu Dhabi race if you know what I mean.
The simple fact is faster car wins here and less work for driver on the rear view mirror but still we got to keep tyres in mind. Well, just a hope!!
