VF1blog: F1 Dark Horses Hot To Trot
The first seven races of the season were certainly a bit of an enigma. Never have we had such an unpredictable start to the season. As expected, the cream rose to the top and repeat winners began to give the F1 world some sense of normalcy.
The second half of the season kicks off in just a few daysí time at a fan favourite circuit in Belgium. Spa-Francorchamps circuit is steeped in history and has more character in one corner than most modern day circuits can even hope to achieve.
Perennial favourites such as Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull will certainly want to continue building on their strong first half. All of whom will surely feature upgrades and renewed enthusiasm. Having said that, there are a few dark horses that have shown incredible promise and flashes of brilliant pace. Williams, Sauber and Lotus are the teams in mind. Not to diminish any other team, however, these three have the tools to keep the leading three teams quite honest.
Perez has shown that the Sauber has the legs, Maldonado has snagged Williams a victory and both Raikkonen and Grosjean have been quite at home on the podium. The slightest improvement in form from both team and driver can see any one of these teams take the fight to the leaders. Each of these teams is essentially one good update away from being a contender.
McLaren, Red Bull and Ferrari had better watch their backs. Any combination of poor results and bad luck could see them slipping in the standings. While Alonso enjoys a 40 point lead, one DNF can seriously change the look of the championship points table.
Keep your eyes on these dark horses. Thanks to a first half which saw so many winners steal points from each other, it's still anyone's title.
